Looking at finances, Meredith suggested the Rule of 36 to readers at Boston.com. “Boston spends about one-­third of their salary on rent. That’s the unwritten number that landlords use,” said Meredith Kiep, an agent for Charlesgate Realty. “Divide your annual salary by 36, and that’s one you can afford.”
