7 Easy Steps to a Healthier (and Safer) Home

7 Easy Steps to a Healthier (and Safer) Home

Just like your body, it is important to keep your home as healthy as possible. There are a plethora of ways to make your home healthier. While not all of them are cheap, most are rather easy to do. And, once the steps are completed, they typically only need to be maintained.

Pest Removal

Roaches, rodents and other pests are not only creepy, but they also can make you and your family sick. Rodents also can damage your home by gnawing on your walls and cords, which can cause fires  making you need to hire fire damage restoration services.

Duct Cleaning

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association calls the HVAC system “the lungs of your home.” So, it is wise to treat the HVAC system as such. A typical household generates 40 pounds of dust every year. All of this dust, along with every other occupant-created contaminate, is circulated through your home five to seven times a day when the heat or air conditioning runs. To get better air quality in your home, be sure to clean your home’s ducts frequently. Another advantage to keeping you ducts clean is that it reduces your heating and cooling costs because the HVAC system is more efficient when the ducts are clean.

Water Filtration

Even though the United States has some of the safest drinking water, thousands of Americans get water-associated illnesses each year. Nearly all tap water contains some level of contaminates, and some water companies use either chlorine or chloramine to disinfect drinking water. Thankfully, water filtration systems are rather common and a good way to make your drinking water safer. Filtration systems range from water pitchers, like the relatively inexpensive Brita systems, to whole house systems, which can be pricey. Additionally, controlling cockroaches can become your most difficult task because it requires special knowledge. Wildlife and pest removal experts, like Trutech, are qualified to help get rid of any pests plaguing your home in a humane way.

Chemicals and Contaminates

  • Lead paint may be present if your home was built before 1978. Not only do you want to maintain your home’s appearance, but you also need to rectify any chipping paint problems to keep lead paint at bay.
  • Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can be deadly if levels get high enough. Radon test kits can be bought for under $15. Radon alarms and radon removal systems are just as affordable.
  • Dry cleaning, believe it or not, may contaminate your home since many dry cleaners utilize perchloroethylene to clean clothes. There are two ways to avoid this chemical. The best way is to find an organic dry cleaner. If that isn’t possible, remove the plastic and air out your clothes before bringing them into your home.
  • Non-toxic cleaners should be used around the house whenever possible. You can make your own products (vinegar or a lemon and salt mixture work well) or you can buy organic cleaners. Either way, you help your health and the environment by forgoing toxic house cleaners.
