Dining Vegetarian in Boston Can Be “Vegelicious!”

Dining Vegetarian in Boston Can Be “Vegelicious!”

One of the, arguably, best things about Boston is the multitude and variety of great restaurants in and around the city. With people coming from all around the world to live and learn here, you can enjoy food from almost country any in any of Boston’s great neighborhoods. Taking a stroll down even one street in Back Bay can present you with more choices than dinners you can eat in a week.

But what if you are vegetarian? Or vegan? Is it impossible to find options to eat out if this is the case?

No! There are tons of great options scattered around the city offering vegetarian (no meat, fowl, or fish) and vegan (no dairy, eggs, or honey) dishes. Here are just a few:

Clover and Clover Food Trucks
7 Holyoke Street & Random Places Around the city

Clover’s menu is simple but delicious – and it changes daily. Over the course of 4 weeks, 70% of its menu will be completely different based upon the seasonal ingredients and the chef’s whim. They also don’t use any preservatives, “natural flavors,” “flavor enhancers,” “artificial flavors,” or any ingredient that takes a chemistry degree to pronounce.

Grasshopper Restauraunt
1 North Beacon Street, Allston

Grasshopper is a tried and true vegetarian favorite that has a HUGE menu ranging from seitans to “seafood style” root vegetables. There is something for everyone and they even offer online ordering so you can peruse the menu before arriving. (Sorry, no delivery 🙁 ) Their motto is “Where the animals live to tell it all” and their cooking takes non-violent cooking to new levels.

Peace o’ Pie
487 Cambridge Street, Allston
This pizza place uses all vegan ingredients – staying away from honey and refined sugars. They also use organic ingredients whenever possible and offer gluten-free options. There are tons of different toppings that are delicious – showing that being vegan is more than tofu and meat-substitutes. They also use eco-friendly products, recycle, and compost – helping the environment even more!

So what if you are not around one of these restaurants? Or out to dinner with non-vegetarian friends? There are still options you can eat at most area restaurants:

Try eating international. Indian, Greek, Italian, Ethopian, and Asian almost always have vegetarian options. Note, some of their veg dishes contain fish sauce but this can easily be swapped out for soy.

Call ahead. Ask questions ahead of time to see what vegetarian options are available or what they can ship up for you. Often these “impromptu, off menu” dishes are vegelicious!

Go for easy modification.  Does a dish look like it could easily be vegan? cucumber, avocado and tofu maki with cream cheese … Ask your server if they can prepare a vegan version of the dish.

Be Grateful. Show your appreciation for any menu modifications and the chef’s taking the time to accommodate your needs.

So next time when you are invited to dinner in Boston, don’t sweat! Whether in Back Bay or Dorchester, you are sure to find something delicious. And while you are checking out some new neighborhoods and culinary treats, consider taking a glance at the real estate as well. Happy veg-eating!
