5 New Year’s Resolutions for the Home

[This is a guest post by Ken Torrino]

You’ve made New Year’s resolutions for yourself, but what about your home? Chances are you have some things around the house that need fixing or updating. Try these five improvements and make taking care of your home a top priority this year.

new years resolution for the home1) Store & Organize

Everyone has stuff that accumulates around the house over time. Take a look at your tables, desks and overflowing filing cabinets and get a handle on what needs organizing. Purchase storage bins or stackable cubes if need be and start cleaning up your home by giving everything its own space.

2) Cut Down on Clutter

As you start organizing your home, you’ll inevitably find some things that you no longer need. Whether it’s toys that the kids have long outgrown or stacks of decades-old paperwork, it’s time to start getting rid of unnecessary items. Decide what can get cleaned up and donated and what’s truly trash, then get to work on clearing things out.

3) Tie Up Loose Ends

How many home improvement projects did you start this past year? How many did you finish? Make a list of anything around the house that is only half done and make it part of this year’s resolution to see each thing through to completion.

4) Stay Safe

Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector and replace batteries if necessary. Contact the Radon Mitigation System service at leat once a year, and have your home tested for leaks or buildup of potentially harmful gases such as radon. If you have a fireplace, make sure that the chimney is clean. Check that areas such as your attic and bathrooms are clean and free of mold. Also, if you live in an area that has trouble with crime, consider having a home security system installed.

5) Curb Energy Use

We got together with Johnathan from one of the best small appliance repair Toronto shops and according to them, poor insulation, old or ill-fitting windows, outdated appliances and standard light bulbs can all waste energy, costing you extra money every month. If you don’t have the budget to replace appliances, start by switching to energy-efficient bulbs in all of your lamps. Turn off lights and hibernate computers when not in use to save energy. When possible, invest in Energy Star appliances that use less electricity. You can count on PittsburghApplianceRepairs for fast, efficient repairs, they can diagnose the problem quickly and and make the repair efficiently.
